REFERRAL CENTER VISIT TO KANTI CHILDREN HOSPITAL BY HEALTH WORKERS FROM SETI PROVINCIAL HOSPITAL, LUMBINI PROVINCIAL HOSPITAL AND KARNALI PROVINCIAL HOSPITAL

The referral Center Visit from Seti Provincial Hospital, Lumbini Provincial Hospital and Karnali Provincial Hospital was organized by Kanti Children’s Hospital in collaboration with World Child Cancer (WCC) and Together Against Childhood Cancer (TACC). From 22nd to 27th December, 2024, a team of dedicated health workers from three provincial hospitals undertook a transformative observational visit to Kanti Children’s Hospital in Kathmandu, under the Referral center visit to Kanti Children’s Hospital from Shared Care Center for treatment of childhood cancer. This program is a visionary initiative designed to bridge the gap in pediatric oncology care by empowering regional hospitals to deliver high-quality, evidence-based cancer treatment through collaboration with specialized referral centers.

Early Warning Sign and Symptoms of Childhood Cancer (EWSS) Siraha and Saptari District 2024

The estimated number of new children suffering from cancer is around 2000-2500 per year in Nepal. Only a fraction of the total estimated pediatric cancer patients reaches Kanti Children`s Hospital, Bhaktapur Cancer Hospital, Patan Academy of Health Sciences and BP Koirala Memorial Cancer Hospital each year. Signs and symptoms of childhood cancer being mostly non-specific and many myths existing in the community, we were prompted to conduct orientation training regarding childhood cancer and its early detection among the grass-root level health workers. With eleven such trainings already conducted elsewhere, Siraha and Saptari were chosen as the twelfth site for this training program for creating awareness and smooth running of Shared care center to be established in Madhesh province.

This training was organized on 2081/06/06 (22nd September 2024) at Hotel Vishal, Lahan, Siraha, Nepal. It was organized by Bhaktapur Cancer Hospital in Collaboration with Kanti Children`s Hospital with support from Together Against Childhood Cancer (TACC), Ramesh Gupta Memorial Trust (RGMT) and World Child Cancer (WCC).

REFERRAL CENTER VISIT TO KANTI CHILDREN HOSPITAL BY HEALTH WORKERS FROM KOSHI HOSPITAL

The referral Center Visit from Koshi Hospital was organized by Kanti Children’s Hospital in collaboration with World Child Cancer (WCC) and Together Against Childhood Cancer (TACC). From October 25th to 30th, 2024, a team of dedicated health workers from Koshi Hospital undertook a transformative observational visit to Kanti Children’s Hospital in Kathmandu, under the Shared Care Center program for childhood cancer treatment. This program is a visionary initiative designed to bridge the gap in pediatric oncology care by empowering regional hospitals to deliver high-quality, evidence-based cancer treatment through collaboration with specialized referral centers.

Shared Care Center establishment at Province Hospital, Surkhet, Karnali Province

The concept for establishment of Shared Care center for treatment of childhood cancer was conceived while developing the proposal for WCC project in Nepal as this was believed to significantly improve the access and reduce the cost of treatment. Karnali Provincial Hospital, Surkhet (Karnali Province) was chosen as the sites in consideration to the city being at center of many of the districts in the karnali Province, easy road access, a relatively well established Pediatrics services and the commitment of the local team.
